Fire Door Hinges & Ironmongery

Fire Door Hinges & Ironmongery: Fire door ironmongery is the hardware on a fire door, hinges, latches, locks, handles, closers, letter plates and spy holes, which must be suitable for use on fire doors so it does not create a weak point when the door is exposed to fire.

Hardware changes are where many good fire doors are spoiled: a lightweight hinge, a lock with an oversized mortice, a cheap letter plate or an extra bolt drilled through the leaf. We replace hardware with items that have fire test evidence for the door type and fit them without cutting the leaf beyond what that evidence allows.

Fire Door Hinges & Ironmongery: questions

How many hinges does a fire door need?

Most single-leaf fire doors use three hinges; taller or heavier leaves may need four. The door's test evidence specifies the number and type.

Can I fit any lock to a fire door?

No. The lock must be suitable for fire doors and fitted within the size limits of the door's evidence, often with intumescent protection around the mortice.

Are cat flaps allowed in fire doors?

Not unless the flap is part of the door's tested design. A cat flap cut into a fire door, including many flat entrance doors, will normally make it non-compliant.

Do letter plates on flat doors need to be fire-rated?

Yes, where the flat entrance door is a fire door. Fire-rated letter plates include intumescent liners that close the opening in a fire.
