Fire Door Hold-Open Devices

Fire Door Hold-Open Devices: A fire door hold-open device keeps a fire door open in normal use and releases it to close automatically when the fire alarm activates. Free-swing closers let the door move freely like an ordinary door, then close it on alarm.

Wedged fire doors are one of the most common findings in schools, care homes and offices, usually because people need the door open. The answer is not another sign. It is a device that does the job safely: the door stays open when needed and closes the moment the alarm sounds.

  3. Test

Release is tested with the alarm, or the alarm sounder where acoustic.

  4. Record

Device details and test results are added to your records.

Fire Door Hold-Open Devices: questions

Is it legal to wedge a fire door open?

Wedging a fire door open defeats it, because it cannot close in a fire, and it can breach fire safety law. If a door needs to stay open, use a device that releases it automatically when the alarm activates.

Do acoustic hold-open devices work with any alarm?

They listen for the alarm sounder, so the sounder must be loud enough at the door. We check the sound level and the alarm type before recommending one.

Can hold-open devices be used on flat entrance doors?

Generally not on flat entrance doors in residential blocks. They are mainly used on corridor and cross-corridor doors in other buildings, subject to the fire risk assessment.

How often should they be tested?

With the weekly fire alarm test, and checked in detail at each fire door inspection.
