Fire Door Signage

Fire Door Signage: Fire door signage is the mandatory blue-and-white signs on fire doors telling people how the door must be used: keep shut, keep locked shut, or automatic fire door keep clear.

Signs are a small part of fire door compliance, but missing, wrong or faded signs are an easy inspection fail. We check which sign each door needs, based on how it is used, and fit the right one on both faces where required.

Fire Door Signage: questions

Do all fire doors need a sign?

Most do. Self-closing fire doors usually need fire door keep shut signs; doors to cupboards and risers usually need keep locked shut; doors on hold-open devices need automatic fire door signs. Some doors, such as flat entrance doors and hotel bedroom doors, are commonly treated differently.

Do signs go on both sides of the door?

Self-closing fire doors are generally signed on both faces. Cupboard and riser doors are usually signed on the outside only.

Can I use any fire door sign?

Use mandatory blue-and-white signs consistent with BS ISO 7010 and the building's existing signage.

Is a missing sign a serious defect?

It will normally be recorded as a fail or advisory. It is quick and cheap to fix, so it is best done on the same visit.
