Fire doors for schools, colleges & universities
Corridor, stair and classroom fire doors inspected and repaired around the school timetable.
Schools have long corridors of cross-corridor fire doors, heavy daily traffic and doors that are often wedged open for ventilation or supervision. Work has to fit around term times and safeguarding rules, and governors want clear evidence that the doors are maintained.
What do schools, colleges & universities typically need?
- Holiday and after-hours inspection slots
- Alarm-linked hold-open devices to stop doors being wedged
- Vision panel and glazing repairs
- Reports suitable for governors and trust estates teams

Questions we're asked
How long does a fire door inspection take?
Typically 10 to 20 minutes per door, depending on access and how many defects need photographing. A block with 40 communal doors is usually a single day on site.
Do you need to remove the doors?
No. Inspections are non-intrusive. The inspector measures, operates and photographs each door in place and only lifts away removable items such as letter-plate covers where it is safe to do so.
Is it legal to wedge a fire door open?
Wedging a fire door open defeats it, because it cannot close in a fire, and it can breach fire safety law. If a door needs to stay open, use a device that releases it automatically when the alarm activates.
Do acoustic hold-open devices work with any alarm?
They listen for the alarm sounder, so the sounder must be loud enough at the door. We check the sound level and the alarm type before recommending one.
