Fire doors for retail, leisure & venues
Stock room, stair and final exit doors checked so the public can always get out.
Shops, gyms, cinemas and venues have members of the public who do not know the building and back-of-house areas that fill up with stock. Fire doors to stores and stairs get propped open and final exits get secured against theft.
What do retail, leisure & venues typically need?
- Panic hardware tested on final exits
- Stock room and stair doors kept shut
- Security on exits without blocking escape
- Fast repair of impact damage

Questions we're asked
Do fire exit doors need panic bars?
Panic hardware to BS EN 1125 is normally used where members of the public or people unfamiliar with the building use the exit. Emergency exit devices to BS EN 179 can be suitable where users are trained staff. The fire risk assessment decides.
Can a fire exit be locked?
It must be openable from inside without a key at all times the building is occupied. Security locks that need a key from inside are not acceptable on escape routes.
How long does a fire door inspection take?
Typically 10 to 20 minutes per door, depending on access and how many defects need photographing. A block with 40 communal doors is usually a single day on site.
Do you need to remove the doors?
No. Inspections are non-intrusive. The inspector measures, operates and photographs each door in place and only lifts away removable items such as letter-plate covers where it is safe to do so.
