Fire Door Hold-Open Devices in Chelmsford

From the CM1 district outwards, we cover Chelmsford and neighbouring towns such as Billericay and Witham for fire door hold-open devices.

A fire door hold-open device keeps a fire door open in normal use and releases it to close automatically when the fire alarm activates. Free-swing closers let the door move freely like an ordinary door, then close it on alarm. We use the same method for buildings in Chelmsford.

Questions from Chelmsford clients

Does regulation 10 apply to buildings in Chelmsford?

Yes, if the building is a multi-occupied residential building with storeys over 11 metres. Chelmsford is in England, so the quarterly communal door checks and annual flat entrance door checks apply to those buildings.

Is it legal to wedge a fire door open?

Wedging a fire door open defeats it, because it cannot close in a fire, and it can breach fire safety law. If a door needs to stay open, use a device that releases it automatically when the alarm activates.

How often should they be tested?

With the weekly fire alarm test, and checked in detail at each fire door inspection.

Do you work in occupied buildings in Chelmsford?

Yes. Inspections and repairs in Chelmsford can be carried out in occupied flats, schools, care homes and workplaces, with doors kept closable at all times.
